I drew my Mommy - signed Ryan
I have no stretch marks :)
I guess there is coz I don't have any ;)
Palmer's Cocoa Butter claims that it helps to prevent stretch marks in pregnant woman. Does it work? I don't know but I know of friends who used it and still ended up with stretch marks. Maybe they didn't apply enough? I didn't try. I'm clueless.
What to Expect When You are Expecting
Having a baby is a big decision. When Ryan was conceived, I was just married - naively thinking that babies don't come that easily - so why worry yet. Young and career minded, pregnancy came as a shock - and guess what? My first thought was 'How am I gonna tell my boss?!!'. My doctor was so surprised and said why would I ever be concerned about telling the boss. I should be happy and announcing the good news to my hubby and family. Haha! Those were the days!
I didn't have many people to consult. My mums and aunts forgot about their experiences. My friends were still unmarried or were just getting there. I was a bit in a limbo. What to expect? Are the things that I feel, the sickness, the cramps normal? When do I raise alarm? I asked some mummy colleagues and I was refered to my gynae for my 1st appointment.
The next thing I did was to buy a book. Since my mom and aunts forgot, I have to turn to books. And this I'd recommend to moms-to-be : 'WHAT TO EXPECT WHEN YOU ARE EXPECTING' by Heidi Murkoff, Arlene Eisenberg and Sandee Hathaway B.S.N. The book basically helped me through my pregnancies. Knowing that those feelings, the tiny aches and pains etc etc were just part and parcel of pregnancy was really a great relief. Believe me, preggy moms worry and think alot. Or maybe it was just me ;)
What else to do. Check out the web. Sign up for pregnancy newsletters eg. from http://www.whattoexpect.com/what-to-expect/landing-page.aspx. Join forums and chat with moms - I'm with the Mead Johnson AMN forum. Most importantly, share with your husband :)

Rantings of a working mum
Will bosses ever understand a working mom's commitment towards her family? And especially when there are young children at hand? Will bosses ever understand why we have to take EL or rush back when our young children are sick or need our immediate attention? Do they know that a mom's role is important in shaping the future for our kids? Or do they even care? Or should they care? As moms, we are the ones who coach our young children in their studies. We are the ones who groom them. We are the ones who feed them...We just have to be there when they need us. Well, it's not to say that daddies don't do these but generally moms play a bigger role or at least, it is in my case. It simply wouldn't do when we leave the house early in the morning without seeing our kids and when we come back, they have already gone to bed. The last thing I know is that they would call my maids 'moms'!!!! Jokes aside, I try not to let that happen! And there is this thing about sending our kids to tuition or enrichment classes right after work. The rush!!
So what if I work during office hours but back in time to take care of my children and family. And when they have been properly attended to, I resume my late night work? Not really a problem except that it can be really tiring at times. While we do all these, does it mean that us moms are not concentrating on our jobs, our careers?
So, perhaps.. just perhaps...SAHM is a better option? Or perhaps, perhaps I can be a SAHM operating small flexi-hour business ??? Hmmm....
Well ... looks like I'm very 'loh soh' today. That's ranting from a working mom like me!

Looking for the right children's study table..
And then, of course, there is my princess Rachel who will soon grow up :). The ideal is something like what my son's kindergarten use. But unfortunately those were custom made. I looked around in many furniture shops and couldn't find what I had in mind. Finally, I went to IKEA. Actually I'm not too keen on IKEA products.
They have great creative ideas but the quality is just so so. But this table is JUST what I needed :) Costed me RM129 but I think it was worth it. The best part is that it is washable in case we play the messy stuff like arts and craft. Their chairs are nice to look at but expensive @ RM59 each. So decided to get the plastic chairs from one of those chinese shops - looks good, hardy and cheap - only RM9 each.
I was also looking for a cupboard or rack to store his books and stationery. I found these instead. From IKEA. Colourful stackable boxes of different sizes. Just perfect for my boys and definitely cheaper than a cupboard.
Happy, happy... :)
HFM (Hand Foot and Mouth disease) Scare!!
- Incubation period is about 1 week
- Fever may be present before the spots. In my son's case, there was no fever.
- Appearance of spots/rash on the palm of hands, sole of feet, buttocks or even on knees. Then it will spread!
- If so, don't wait. Just bring the child to the doctor. Keep other children away from him/her.
- See a doctor immediately
- Stay away from school or child care - to contain the spread
- There is no specific effective drug and medicine to treat or prevent HFM. Docs will only provide symptomatic treatment to relieve fever, aches, or pain from the mouth ulcers.
- Dehydration is a concern because the mouth sores may make it difficult and painful for children to eat and drink.
- Keep them cool. Drink lots of water.
- My doc told me to feed ice cream to my son
- If there is fever, dress the child in light, thin clothing - sponge with room temperature or warm water. Drink lots of water
- Just keep clean and hope for the best.
- Frequently wash hands especially after playing, toilet, etc
- Bath and clean immediately after school or outing.
- Wipe down house furniture, care, toys etc with disinfectant - eg Dettol
- Keep tab on kindergarten/school for HFM outbreak. Then you may consider whether to send them to school. Some kindergarten only close down when there are a few cases. May be a bit too late.
- Avoid contact with any HFM children - contagious
- If adults are sick, stay away from the children. We may be carriers! HFM on adults can be just a case of sore throat

Chinese medicine for cough & flu? Hao Zao San, Cordyceps, Bird Nests, 'Suet kap'..
The earlier cough was almost subsiding. I was still skeptical about the effects of Singular and worried, like most moms do, about administering drugs to my kids for long period of time. I turned to Chinese medicine. My little mind tells me that Chinese medicine being herbs and roots (and I mean genuine ones with no ++ ingredients if you know what I mean) should be better than drugs. No science here really... just my mind on overdrive mode :)
I bought 2 types of Chinese medicine - known to most moms - Hou Zao San (Monkey Bezoar Powder) and Cordyceps Powder. They don't come cheap - costed me RM90 each. And if I buy from Eu Yan Sang, it would be more expensive at RM138 for Hou Zao San. Price aside, it works! According to Eu Yan Sang, Hou Zao San is supposed to 'clear excessive phlegm, relieve cough and asthmatic bronchitis, especially suitable for infants suffering from chronic cough'. My mom gave me lots of it when I was a kid. Cordyceps is supposed to help strengthen the lungs. It comes with various grades and can be as expensive as few thousand Ringgit. Too soon to see the effect yet.
As I was saying, it was subsiding when the 2nd round of cough and flu attacked again! My husband thought that it was better to take them to see the pediatrician. Guess what! Both sons got ear infection again! Can Hao Zao San help here? No idea. Once again, the works... antibiotic, cough, phlegm, flu medicine. Sigh!
One thing for sure, I need to 'poh' (cantonese for 'strengthen health wise') their lungs and natural defense system. The chinese sin seh recommended the expensive bird nest and cordyceps. I have the cordyceps now - thats fine. And I choose 'suet kap' (sorry, not sure what you call this in English) over bird nests. Works about the same way I was told, and it is cheaper. And also it is largely because you just don't know how genuine the bird nests is. There have been talks about bleaching agent in bird nests. My late gynae also told me not to take bird nests when I was pregnant as we don't know if it is really genuine. The fake ones are made of 'petroleum' components which is harmful to the fetus. My pediatrician is worried about infection. So, to play it safe, I got the 'suet kap' instead. Have yet to prepare it (double boil with sugar cane rock sugar) as my kids have to be well and healthy first. Waiting ...

My Mead Johnson AMN mom friends
Now, Asian Mom Network has elevated my status to 'Super Mom' - haha! like real! - I don't feel that super really. Still learning thru trials and errors.
The best thing about AMN really is that I got to know some MJ moms who have become my
friends since. We chat quite often on MSN Chat now and do alot more sharing about parenting and so forth. One mom, Aricia - hi, if you are reading :) - we were pregnant at the same time
then - and our docs then was the late Dr Jeremy Chuah. We were quite frantic when we knew
that our trusted gynae was no longer with us. I was so relieved when I got to know Aricia
and we were able to look for a new gynae together and encourage each other thru our
pregnancy (mine wasn't that smooth)! Thanks Aricia!
Along the way, I got to know a few more AMN moms too. Isn't that great! And its really cool too - being friends BUT don't know how each other look like. Mystery, mystery.
Anyway, just a note to my Mead Johnson AMN mom friends, if you are reading - So glad to know you!..And happy that we are able to share mommy experiences and encourage each other along the way :)

My maid's contract is expiring soon
So, one of my maids is soon to go by year end! So, what now? Should I employ another? What if the new one gives me trouble? They don't come any cheaper now… blah blah blah... the usual questions, the usual considerations.
So what if I send my Terrible Two going on Three... still a 'Terrible T' .. to a playschool first. To instill some discipline and to tone down the ‘terrible-ness’. Perhaps then I can still cope with only 1 maid. Still I have a baby who needs lotsa attention. My Terrible T is going to a playschool in the 3rd term – like my eldest, hope he will become more manageable after that.
Then there is a matter of whether 1 maid can care for 3 young active kids and still manage daily household chores. Still thinking.
A gloomy day

Is Singulair safe?
Well, as I was saying, while google-ing, I found that some reports saying that this medication can cause mood and behavior related changes - aggressive behavior, tantrums, nightmares, depression, anxiousness, hallucination, even suicidal, and the list goes on. Sounds ABSOLUTELY TERRIFYING! I began to think that perhaps my younger sons’ hyperactivity, tantrums, naughtiness and sometimes nightmares could be due to this drug? Or is it just pure Terrible Two ‘syndrome’ – he is 2 years old, going on 3. How can really I tell?
I went to ask my pediatrician recently. Like some doctors, he mentioned that manufacturers of drugs tend to list down ALL possible effects and if doctors were to follow, then ‘there will be no drugs to prescribe’. And, by the way, he thinks that Singulair is safe. Hmmm.. means what? Should I continue? If there is really nothing to worry about, what then is the hoo-haa all about????

Try this cheap & good PHONICS reading series
Once upon a time …MY time, I never knew PHONICS. I was only taught what they call ‘Suku Kata’ now. So, when I first send my eldest to kindergarten last year, I realized I had to learn Phonics TOO. Otherwise, how to teach him? It was quite laughable that I had to learn kindergarten stuff again after so very long time. But, no choice for us moms really. My eldest son was a late bloomer (see earlier post on ‘My son was Slow in Speech Development’)… slow in speech development and thus affecting other development areas. Phonics was a problem. My son’s kindy teacher burnt me a CD so that I can start learning :) :) and then guide my kid. He has no problem with single sound. But when it comes to sound blending, he just couldn’t get it!!
So, mom goes hunting. I was very specific about what to look out for. I wanted step by step approach sound blending series, simple with key words, graphics and a short story to hold my son’s attention After many rounds of hunting for the right materials, I came across this series from a local publisher, NOON Publication called MY BIG BOOK OF PHONICS READING PROGRAMME – definitely a bigger than normal book. It has just the stuff I need. My son likes the book and I see improvement when I teach him. Here’s a pix of the 2 series that I bought. The price is very affordable – around RM13 each and they can be found easily in hypermarkets (I got mine at Carrefour) and some local book stores. Worth trying!

Johnson & Johnson baby products are safe to use!
Here’s the extract from Reuters:
BEIJING (Reuters) - Chinese health authorities said on Saturday that they had found no evidence of cancer-causing chemicals in baby products made by U.S. company Johnson & Johnson.
The State Food and Drug Administration had investigated 33 products, including baby shampoo, made by Johnson & Johnson after a U.S. consumer group charged that they contained carcinogens.
The SFDA, in a statement on its website, said it would continue to monitor the situation and carry out timely tests.
"The results of the investigation will help eliminate consumers' doubts and unnecessary worries. It was very important and timely," Wang Meiying, general manager of Johnson & Johnson (China), said in a statement.
According to media reports, a Shanghai-based regional supermarket chain, Nonggongshang Supermarket Group, ordered its 3,500 outlets to remove baby bath products made by Johnson & Johnson from their shelves.
Other big outlets in China, including the U.S. supermarket Wal-Mart Stores and its French rival Carrefour, still carry the products.
Johnson & Johnson has disputed the allegations by the U.S.-based Campaign for Safe Cosmetics, saying that trace levels of the compounds in question result from processes that make the products gentle for babies and safe from bacteria growth.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration and other government agencies consider these trace level safe.

The Middle Child
I have asked a couple of my friends who are middle children… Do they have to fight for their parents’ attention? … Are they often ignored and find that their parents ‘love’ the eldest or baby of the family more? …Have they ever felt insecure in the years of growing up? And mostly, their answers were yes. It got me really worried as I do not want my child to grow up thinking that his parents do not love him enough. How terrible! Even at this young age, he knows exactly how to ‘buy hearts’ (Cantonese phrase). Compared with my eldest, my second son makes a lot more attempts to get our attention. And when he gets it, he becomes very ‘manja’. I started to be conscious of my actions around all my children. I try not to show disparity (both in praises and disciplinary actions) and focus just as much attention to my 2nd son. Is this enough?

My kids having COUGH and COLD again!
The weather is freaky! Burning hot in the morning and afternoon, it pours and pours. All my 3 children are having bad cough, clogging phlegm and flu …AGAIN! Are there herbs and supplement to raise immunity in children? I’m still hunting for it! My eldest school going son is usually the one who gets it first. Sometimes it would get so bad that it would lead to high fever that goes beyond 40 deg, chills and shakes, and even ear infection. And then domino effect! My younger son would then catch on and just cough and cough and cough. His lungs are more sensitive because when he was just 1 month old, he was hospitalized for a week for bronchopneumonia. He was on oxygen support, physiotherapy, suction (a small long tube is used to insert into the tiny nose and month to take out the mucus/phlegm) and on drips (a big needle going into his very tiny hand – it sooo painful to watch!). That was one experience I care NOT to repeat! Quite traumatizing really especially when you are talking about your new born baby! So for all mummies out there, please isolate your babies if anyone around them has cough and cold! I do that for my baby daughter!
Visit to the pediatrician is a monthly affair – and they don’t come cheap!! More often than not, my children have to take LOADS of medicine such as nebulizer (to dilute the phlegm and my younger son just hates it!!), cough/flu syrup, antibiotic and even inhalers like Combivent and Steretide. If the cough gets worse, they are given Singulair to take for 1-2 months - costs a bomb I must say (1 months supply is ~RM200!!)! On this note - I was google-ing yesterday and found that there could be side effects on Singulair. I will check with my pediatrician and tell you more later.
So what can we do?
- Once your child catches the bug, DON’T WAIT! See the doctor! If you wait, it gets worse and the medicine gets stronger , your child suffers.. and it costs more!!! My Doc actually scolded me for waiting!
- Vicks – some said that this works - rub Vicks on the sole of the feet and then cover it up with socks before they sleep.
- I rub Vicks on my children’s chest – seems to work too
Hand washing – after school, after food, after sneezing/coughing, after play, after outing… just keep clean!! - If your child is sick, try to keep them at home and not to send them to day care or school. This is so that the germs don’t spread and you can observe your child for medical attention.
- Try to avoid people who have caught the bug – I know it’s easier said than done but at least we tried, right!
- Household disinfectant – I use Dettol to wipe my furniture and floor.
- Also I’m almost fanatic about bathing (if can) my children (and myself) after a visit to the doctor or hospital. Those are the places which are ‘full’ of germs.
- Lots of vitamin C. It’s ok. The excess will come out in the urine.
- Scott’s Emulsion – the orange flavor tastes better. People said that it helps increase immunity. I give it to my children anyway.
- Air their bedrooms and clean daily
- Drink plenty of water – especially when your child is sick
- My pediatrician advised me to give my children flu shots. I haven’t yet. So can’t tell you much there.
While I do most of that, the bug just keeps coming back. And, I don’t like to administer too much antibiotics on my children. So now, I’m hunting for supplements that can help to boost my children’s immunity system. Some suggested the following - I’m still thinking and thinking about whether to try it on my children.
- Cordyceps (it costs a bomb!)
- Cactus juice from E.Excel (??not sure)
- The Chinese says Bird nests – but my doctor is worried about infection… hmmm
- … still hunting…..any advice for me please??

Should Chinese illiterate parents register their kids in Chinese schools?
1. Chinese is an important language - even non Chinese parents are sending their kids to Chinese schools
2. Chinese schools are strong in Math and Science
3. Generally, Chinese schools are better in managing discipline.
However, we are really worried. Can our son cope? He is still slow in catching up with his studies and activities even though he has made some improvements since last year (see my earlier posting about 'My son is slow in speech development'). But can he really cope? He does not speak the language and learning the Chinese strokes seems like a difficult task. Discipline may be better in Chinese schools, but being protective parents, we worry that it gets too strict especially if he has difficulty following!
I have friends who prefer the Kebangsaan schools. To them, Chinese is just another language that can be picked up. And English, no matter what, is and will still be the key 'business' language. They are of opinion that building IQ and EQ are more important and that the non-Chinese schools can deliver better. Most of all, they do not believe that children should be pressured into doing mountains of homework!!
Finally, we decided to register my son in a Chinese school. Why? A kindergarten principal advised us .. it is harder to be accepted in a Chinese school and we still have time to coach my son. Worse case, it is easier to pull him out of a Chinese school for a Kebangsaan school later.
Next ... I am looking out for Chinese enrichment classes (even home tuition) to help my son...

My Son was Slow in Speech Development
Being concerned parents, we got really worried and started asking around for help and advices. I have even posted a discussion on Mead Johnson forum. Many moms gave me good advices. Thanks very much :). I was hunting for Speech Therapist to see if there was a medical problem. All speech therapist were booked up but managed to do some assessments! Frantic, we even checked him for mild altruism and hyperactivity and such. Thank God, he was fine. He was just slower.
It seems that this is a fairly common problem, especially when he/she is the first born. (My 2-yr old son speaks very well. He plays with his older brother and just copies him.) After my AMN posting, several moms also came forward with similar problems - including my neighbour's daughter! So if you have similar problem, should you be worried? First step, go for checks - audiologist, speech therapist, professional help, doctors or even psychiatrist (if it is behavioral issue) to rule out the worst. The faster you know, the faster you can seek medical attention for your child if you need to.
In my case, my son was just slow. I began coaching him in the evenings on the simple basics that he even had problem with then. Here are some of the things I did and some suggestions:
1. Do writings - numbers and alpha/phonics.
2. Use of flash card - random flash and sequence flash.
3. Playing games with flash card - eg. closing the cards and asking him to flip over and indetify them one by one.
4. Reverse teacher-student role by letting be the teacher. (I would intentionally make a mistakes so that he can 'correct' me. Works! )
5. He loves bedtime stories. I got him to read with me simple pre-school reader books. Made him pronounce words properly. And explain the meaning of some words to him.
6. Give him incentives (colourful stickers with his favourite characters) if he complete his writing or did something well.
7. Speak to him all the time and encourage him to describe things to me (even while we were on the road).
8. For some moms, they send their kids to music classes eg Musikgarten. It seems that this helps.
I shared coaching experiences with his teacher (and vice versa) and together, we pooled our efforts to help him. His teacher would update me on what were the current topics and where he needed more drilling. I would then find ways to revise and reinforce it with him at home. We saw marked improvement! As parents, we need to recognise that there is only so much that a teacher can do in school - with so many students and limited time. So parental involvement is the KEY. Just talk to their teachers and find out the areas that you need to reinforce in your child.
Today, my son is a different person in school than he was last year. No longer quiet. In fact, quite chatty and very much his own personality. He is still slower than a lot of students but I'm making efforts to help him. E.nopi Math helped him a lot. And through his playmates in school, at enrichment classes and at home (playground), he is learning to communicate more.
There still many more areas to pick up. My quest for his better future continues....
